Nutcracker - Round 1 - Gandale, Catterick - George Flinton

Richard McGuire and myself left Pickering in Richards van at around 7:45 this morning (Sunday 8th April) why so early I hear you ask? well that's because some tool thought his race was at 10:00 when infact it started at 11:30. This meant, by the time we got there, Richard had around 5 hours to kill before the start of his race.

As we arrived at Gandale, the rain had stopped and it had warmed up slightly, so we parked the van and wandered over to the registration tent to sign on. Richard grabbed a coffee, and we headed back to the van, I prepared my bike (a Trek Top fuel 9.9 ssl wannabe) and got kitted up in my race gear. And Rich went to sleep.

I had a quick chat with one of the race organisers then headed off for a practice lap. The course started at the bottom of a very gravely steep climb which offered very little traction, it then wound up onto a long fire road the headwind here was just nasty. The course then turned back on itself and continued on winding past a stream, unbeknown to me, i'd be riding through that very stream in under half a mile. A few little climbs later the course turned right onto a descent where there was a few riders fannying about deciding weather or not to ride it or not, I didn't think twice and just smashed down it and into the stream. The course continued down the stream and back onto the fire road.

This was a fast fire road with 3 large puddles towards the end. I glanced down at the garmin at it said 25mph just as I was hitting the puddles. The fire road then turned 90 left, but on the corner was a cattle grid and a large gathering of people all yelling 'slow down' I carried on regardless and then realised why the crowd were shouting, the cattle grid was slippy, very slippy. The back end of the bike kicked out, but I managed to control it and continued on to the foot of the next climb.

At the top of the climb you continued straight on and onto a grass track. Which quickly tightened up through some gauze bushes. The course turned sharp right and I was travelling way too fast and carried straight on into a large gauze bush, much to the amusement of the marshall who was sat watching. I picked myself up and carried on up the grass climb. The course then dived off down a lovely descent which quickly turned into a very steep slippy uphill which required granny ring to get up. A quick fire road stint lead me to the infamous water splash, the first two were avoidable by using a line to the right, but the biggest deepest water splash was un-avoidable, so I sped up and lifted the front wheel, but as soon as the front wheel lowered slightly and touched the water, you were drenched, from head to toe! Yet another climb led you back towards the start, but this was not the end of the lap! It continued down a short sharp descent and into the trees. Winding through the trees was nice and a change from the open moor that was the rest of the course.

The trees spat you out onto another steep climb, which required a good back tyre, the cross mark performed outstandingly, hardly loosing traction where many others were slipping and having to walk. The finish was in sight now and only a short climb separating me from it. I spun up the climb and headed back to the van to change my socks for sealskins. A wise decision.

Heres a link to a video of last year course preview which includes some of the trails we rode today:

I met up with Rich back at the start and talked to other competitors about the course, and soon enough it was half 11, which meant one thing. Race time!

The race started with a rolling start which was a good idea, but i'm still trying to decide wether or not I preferred it to a standing start. I started strong gaining places by the second as we climbed up to the fire road. Something wasn't right though, I didn't feel myself at all, but carried on trying to push myself, but my body would not allow it, i had to slow down and tuck in behind another rider to get out of the headwind. We got to the technical section and i started to feel slightly better, this was short lived though, as soon as reached the climb I started to feel it again, but this time worse, I honestly felt like I was going to throw up.

The lap was soon over though and some encouraging words, not suitable for a blog, from Rich spurred me on a bit. I was starting to get into a rhythm and feeling slightly better although this was short lived as a photographer on the course took a photo of me on a climb, the threw his camera onto a pannier rack attached to a ancient single speed road bike, sprinted past me on the fire road then stopped to take more photos...

I don't remember much about the third lap other than it was getting windier by the minute.

The fourth lap was good, I was starting to feel myself and pick up the pace, the only problem being that i'd pushed on and now I was on my own, there was no-body to hide behind in the headwind. Then out of the wind came two elite riders, one of which I recognised as the Aire cycles lad from brown backs who snapped his chain then finished second. I latched onto their wheels and pushed on down the fire road, which was just what I needed. I backed off slightly on the technical section and watched them pedal off into the distance, But I was pushing on and passing some other riders which felt good after a crap start to the race. The lap was over before I knew it and so was the race, I got the thumbs up from the timing boys and left the course.

Richard was waiting in the start area with the Yates cycles team from Malton. After a quick chat with the lads I spun back to the van to get changed, shaking hands with Sam Roper on the way. I got changed and headed back to the start for Richards and Bens race. 2 o'clock rolled round and they were off, so I headed up the hill with Dickie Dale of the Yates cycle team to spectate. Richard and Ben (Big Bear) were making good time along with Tom and James (Yates) The second lap spelled disaster for both Richard and Tom who both experienced mechanicals, Richard punctured and retired, and Tom's cleat bolt worked loose, but he was able to tighten it quickly and continue.

Richard and myself returned to the van to get changed and load it up ready for off, then returned to the start to watch the lads finish and congratulate them.

Overall the first round of Nutcracker was very tough, but very good fun. Looking forward to the next round...

I finished 6th in the junior category and i'm unsure of the other lads results.

Here's a link to my Garmin data from the race:

I do apologise for the length of this blog, I get carried away, and i'm also sorry for the lack of photos in this report, the unofficial Big Bear photographer (my dad) did not attend this race.

My next race is the 22nd April at Dalby Forest - Round 2 of the national points series. I'm looking forward to it, and possibly see some of you up there?

Stay safe on the trails & and the road

Until next time...

George

Below are some photos I took from the 3rd race (sorry about the quality)

Fetish Gravity Enduro Round 1 Innerleithen

Fetish Gravity Enduro Round 1 Innerleithen race report.

Day 1 - open practice and seeding

My practice went really well. Starting at 9:00am I rode all five staged (and the horrible climbs between), so I had an idea of what lines to take for race day. The stages where a selection of DH tracks and natural, very steep stuff.  The loop was 4-5 hours long so I was very tired when finishing at 2:00pm. Then after a quick bite to eat I had to ride to the start of stage five for seeding.
Seeding is basically a qualifying run on the last stage to place everyone in order in each category. Also everyone's seeding time is added to your overall, so everyone was riding for a good time. I did a time of 7:19 which placed me about 8th in my category, so I was very happy. The fastest time of seeding was two times Mega Avalanche winner Jerome Clementz, who posted a time of about 5 minutes. I had no chance haha.

Day 2 - race day

My start time was 9:49.80am, just after World DH Champion Tracey Moseley! So I had some nice chats about line choices before each stage.
My race runs went really well, no falls, I hit all my lines and some good times scored. So I was very pleased.
Sadly they messed up the timing on stage 4 and 5 so I don't really know my result, but I am guessing is was about 7th-8th in my category. Which ain't so bad!

So overall an amazing weekend with some amazing weather. I would defiantly recommend this type of racing for the experienced riders, it's soo fun but very technically and physically challenging.

Now I'm off to do some serious physical strength training...

Cheers for reading and sorry for the poor English, I'm not the best at writing blogs lol.
Pictures will be uploaded on to Facebook soon.

BMBRS - Round 1 - Sherwood Pines - George Flinton

Four Bears set off from a very foggy Malton at 8am heading towards Sherwood Pines for the first round of the National Points Series. The fog continued to thicken as we drove down the A1, but as we approached Nottinghamshire the fog cleared and the Sun was out, it was looking to be a lovely day.

We pulled into the carpark and wandered down to the main field to sign on. Just as we were setting off back unto the team pickup, the commentator announced that Annie Last was approaching the last kilometre, so we hung around to watch her cross the line then wandered back up to get the bikes ready.

My dad (Adrian) had unloaded the bikes, so we set about checking tyre pressures and fannying about with adjustments and strapping on the numbers. We then set about getting into team kit, Sam and myself chose to go with a jersey and shorts, but Morgan decided that it was freezing and dressed as if he was going out for a ride in the depths of winter...

Morgan decided it would be a good idea to go for a 'mystery tour' around the forest to warm ourselves up, after about 15 minutes of riding we turned back towards the start line to "reccy" the course. We could tell straight away that it was going to be a fast course, it was tight between trees in places and had some technical aspects, the one thing it was lacking was hills... Morgan and Sam both had a tumble on their practice lap, and I thought it would be my turn next...

12 o'clock rolled around which meant the start for my race, we were gridded based on last seasons points, and with this being my first year as british cycling registered I was put to the very back. Just as we were ready to set off, we were informed of a large crash that had happened in the previous start, which resulted in the rider being air lifted to hospital. Our start was moved forward 100m to avoid the incident. The start gun was fired and we were off. The speed at which the front lads set off was unreal, I was still at the back but gaining places gradually, I settled into a pace, gradually moving up the odd place. As I was coming to the end of my first lap, the rider in front of me, braked hard and turned into me (for no reason at all, we were on a straight flat bit of single track) This resulted in my foot coming unclipped and my knee smashed into his pedal taking with it a great lump of skin. I pushed on in anger and passed him, that was the last I saw of him until the finish.

We cracked on with the second lap and I was feeling good, still picking up the the odd place, working my way up the field, this all came to an end when the rider in front of me dropped his bottle, I had no time to react and my front wheel mounted the bottle the slipped sideways sending me over the bars and into a rooty
hole, I quickly picked myself up and jumped back on the bike. My knee hurt rather a lot, and I was struggling to keep going, I made it to the fire road and cracked out a gel, I dropped down a few gears to keep my legs spinning, my knee soon eased and was able to pick up the pace again. This incident had cost me two minutes and a few positions. But I had to crack on...

The third and final lap was now underway, and I was racing a lad from Clifton Cycles. This was a good lap for me, managed to claw back a few places and I was on the back wheel of the Clifton lad and was determined to pass him, I continued to chase him down, and we both started to pick up speed in the final kilometre. We came to the last corner of the race, and we both went for it, stood up out of the saddle sprinting for the finish, I didn't think I was going to be able to have him, but I kept on pushing and got past him in the last 20 meters. Result!

That was it, my first nationals race was over, and I had certainly enjoyed myself. Myself and Morgan hung around waiting for sam, who was still out on course (as a result of last nights drinking & incidents), so we thought it would be an ideal opportunity for a cheeky photo (shown below)

Sam arrived back at the start field, and after having chatting to the Yates cycles team, we all returned back to the pickup to get changed. After getting changed we returned to the start field to find out our results. Morgan was 22nd and Sam 54th in the Sport Men and I was 34th in the Junior male. We watched the Vets sprint off onto their first lap, then headed back to the pickup for the final time, loaded up the pickup and headed back for the A1 northbound, all smiling and eager for the next round in April, which is at Dalby Forest.  Follow the link to my Garmin race data... http://connect.garmin.com/activity/161529301

Team Big Bear Bikes - Endura Race Kit

Hi All,

The expected delivery time from Endura is some time w/c 19th March for the new kit.  To confirm, BBB will provide, free of charge a pair of bib shorts and a s/s jersey to all current, racing members of the team facebook page.  The usual cost of this is £111.60 per rider.

We have revised the design over last year's with the main changes being the shorts are now black and there is a black/grey/white fade on the front and back of the jersey so they tie in with the shorts.  Kit should be easier to keep clean but still have the bold white and orange colour scheme that is so photogenic and all 2011 kit can still be worn alongside the new 2012 kit.

Please email shop@bigbearbikes.co.uk with your Endura size as soon as pos!!!

There are several other items of team kit that you might want to order on top of the free kit and I have listed all the extra items we are doing below including a team bag.  Please let me know on your size email what other items you want or if you want to order extra bib shorts or short sleeve jerseys?  The kit list and the prices are listed at the bottom of this page.

Can I ask that the 2012 bib shorts and s/s jerseys are kept for 'Sunday best' and worn only for racing so they look great, for longer!

Lastly, as we will all be wearing BBB kit with BBB and Trek logos can I ask that if you are looking at buying a new bike, you get in touch with me as we will do very good deals for racers and their families.  We are dealers for Trek, Orange, Genesis, Ridgeback, ibis and Ragley bikes which are all great bikes and market leaders.  Therefore, unless we are miles away on price (very, very unlikely!) and taking into account the other discounts and benefits for team members, I see no reason to buy a new bike from any other bike shop.

Good luck for all your 2012 races!
David
